Why Our Prep Year Program is Essential for Success!

An Unexpected Journey

Apprentice University | 9.27.2021

It was July of 2020 and I was unsure. In the midst of COVID lockdowns, I was planning to graduate from high school at the beginning of August. I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Do I go to college? Which one? What would I study? Do I have time to apply? Should I get a job instead? I don’t even have my driver’s license yet! Do I just take a gap year? What could I do during my gap year? I was overwhelmed with a variety of options, some of which didn’t interest me and others I couldn’t follow through with.

But then, I attended a Virtual Preview Day at Apprentice University. They are in Indiana and I’m in Texas - it’s interesting how I got connected with them. Through this virtual event, I learned more about their Prep Year program. That appealed to me immediately. I knew that’s what I needed next. It’s something that would help me build skills while providing challenges and direction. Through my experience, I got to participate in several classes and worked on multiple projects through the Discovery Cohort.

A few projects to highlight during Discovery include:

  1. Utilizing Canva to design flyers and social media posts for Instagram, LinkedIn, & Facebook
  2. Writing blogs
  3. Working with a coworker to create a podcast in Audacity
  4. Creating my own student website in WordPress
  5. Becoming proficient in the HubSpot Sales course
  6. Learning in-depth features in Google Suite and Microsoft Office

I got the opportunity to take many different classes during Prep Year, such as: Business Writing, Business Accounting, Professional Communications, Intro to Entrepreneurship, Know What You Believe, and Personal Finance. I learned so much from each class - how to write case studies, memos, learned how to balance assets and liabilities, debits and credits, learned how to best engage an audience, how to prepare for an interview, conduct market research, and the importance of iterative thinking. All of this isn’t worth taking a test over and getting back a silly letter grade, but instead, I can apply all of this to life.
